Bolsa Chica Wetlands Interpretive Center Re-opens March 19th
Huntington Beach, CA (PRWeb) March 17, 2007 -- The Bolsa Chica Conservancy announces the re-opening of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Interpretive Center on Monday, March 19, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. Following the ceremony, an open house will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with free public tours at 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Located at 3842 Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, the 1,400 square foot facility originally installed in 1994, now has a new classroom and upgraded exhibits including an aquarium and a touch tank. Live animals continue to be an integral part of the interpretive center's exhibits.
In conjunction with the opening of the center, the Bolsa Chica Conservancy also announces receipt of grants from local companies to support the operation of the interpretive center and its various education, scientific research and habitat restoration programs. More than $30,000 in financial and program support has recently been received from Disney, Metropolitan Water District, Pacific Life Foundation, REI, Simple Green, and Toyota Motor Sales.
"The Bolsa Chica Conservancy's main mission is to raise public awareness about the importance of coastal resources such as the Bolsa Chica Wetlands," said former Huntington Beach mayor, Thomas Mays, currently the Bolsa Chica Conservancy's Chairman of the Board. "Through the interpretive center and our programs, we engage the public and our youth with standards-aligned, hands-on programs that expand their understanding of the science behind coastal resources such as the Bolsa Chica, and their role in preserving it."
Close to 300,000 individuals have been served by the Conservancy and its programs since its inception in 1990. Yearly, more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time are coordinated by the organization to help maintain the wetlands through trash collection and habitat restoration, nearly 7,000 K-college students participate in its standards-aligned science programs and more than 6,000 members of the general public visit the interpretive center to view its engaging exhibits annually, and hundreds of hours are dedicated to monitor the waters of the wetlands.
The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is a private non-profit organization, established in 1990 to advocate education and public awareness, restoration and preservation of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. For more information on the Bolsa Chica Conservancy, visit www.bolsachica.org.
